Toyah – keeping the 80s alive in her 50s
Toyah Ann Willcox, singer and actress, whose career spans more than thirty years, has had 8 Top 40 singles, released over 20 albums, written two books, appeared in over forty stage plays and ten feature films, and voiced and presented numerous television shows. But I saw her in the Picturedrome in the small West Yorkshire hamlet of Holmfirth, the location for 'Last of the Summer Wine'.
For a 55 year old she had still got bags of energy and showbiz pizzazz. Plenty of sequenced backbeat and robotic dance. Flinging her infamous hair about she did St Vitus proud with her jerky choreomania.
This of course played havoc with the focussing of my cameras. About a 10% success rate shooting from the hip at the front of the stage ... right in front of the bass speaker cabinets. After the delight of getting decent shots from my newly acquired Sony RX100 II compact camera, I had to relieve my ears and leave early, missing her greatest hits 'It's a Mystery' and 'I Want to Be Free'.
