Back to 1943

They say nostalgia isn't what it used to be, but the crowds around the four stations of the North Yorks Moors Steam Railway are enjoying every minute of it. From Whitby via Grosmont, Goathland, Levisham (renamed Le Visham (a German occupied French village for the weekend) to Pickering, the steam engines carry armed forces personnel, land girls, spivs, be-turbaned working women and present day passengers back and forth down the line. An atmosphere of wartime spirit pervades at every stop. As in previous visits I jostled my way through the crowds, camera in hand. A friend of mine in New York saw these photographs online and asked "Just where do all these people come from?" I'm not sure I know but they sure are enjoying themselves.
